Heart Coherence Breathing
5 sec in, 5 sec out, 10 min
**Why it works:** The heart has its own nervous system and generates an electromagnetic field that can be measured several feet from the body. Research from the HeartMath Institute suggests that breathing at about 10 breaths per minute (5 seconds in, 5 seconds out) can support heart rate variability coherence, a synchronized and orderly state where the cardiovascular, nervous, and hormonal systems work together more smoothly. People often report feeling calmer, clearer, and more resilient.
**How to do it:**
1. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes.
2. Shift attention to the area around the heart.
3. Breathe in for 5 counts (through the nose), then breathe out for 5 counts.
4. As you breathe, recall (or gently generate) a real feeling of appreciation, care, or love for someone or something. Keep it natural and unforced.
5. Hold this for 10 minutes.
**In The Quest:** Log it in the app. 10 minutes of 5/5 coherence breathing with a sustained elevated emotion counts as complete.
