Billing
Where your plan, payments, and invoices live, how a cash agreement works, and where getting paid lives instead.
Your Space does not have to pay anything to exist. Hosting is free, and it stays free: you pay when you start charging. Everything about what your Space does pay lives in one place: Manage, then Plan and billing. This page covers what you find there and how each kind of payment works.
Money out, not money in
Everything below is what your Space pays. What your Space receives is a different page: Manage, then Get paid. That is where the owner connects the account your money lands in, where you see which of your money paths can take payment today, and where you open your Stripe dashboard to change your bank details. See Get paid.
The two are easy to mix up because both involve Stripe, so it is worth holding the difference: billing is your plan, and Get paid is your earnings. Setting up one does nothing to the other, and connecting a payout account is the owner's to do rather than an admin's.
Where billing lives
- Go to your Space and open Manage.
- Pick Plan and billing.
You see it if you are the owner or an admin of the Space. Members of your team who are not admins do not see billing at all.
Changing your plan
Pick the plan you want on the billing page. The card fields open under the button you pressed. A few things worth knowing:
- Business, Collective and Non Profit plans start with a 14 day free trial, and so does Network.
- Yearly saves two months. A yearly plan costs ten months of the monthly price.
- Moving up takes effect right away. Moving down takes effect at the end of what you have paid for, so you keep what you bought.
- Your plan is what turns on selling. Paid tickets, paid memberships, donations, shop checkout and booking deposits open at Business. Tips are open on every plan. Everything else is an allowance: a free Space has every hosting tool with room to start, and Business and Collective raise the limits. When an allowance is full, only the next new thing waits. Nothing you made is hidden or locked.
- Collective is Business for separate groups that partner: a hub linking partner Spaces, a shared calendar, cross-listing and a lower network fee, with each partner keeping its own Space. See Collective. One organization with chapters takes Network instead.
- Your plan is not the only switch. You can also turn a feature off for your own Space in Manage, then Menu and features, and it stays off whether or not your plan pays for it. So if billing says a tool is included and you still cannot find it, look there before you look at your plan.
See Plans and pricing for what each plan costs and includes.
Paying by card
Card payments run through Stripe. Your card details never touch Frequency: Stripe holds them, and we hold a reference.
- Manage card, invoices, and receipts from the billing page. The portal link takes you to Stripe, where you can update your card, download invoices, or cancel.
- Renewals are automatic. Your card is charged when the term rolls over, and Stripe emails you the receipt.
Paying another way
Some Spaces settle up directly with us instead: cash, check, or transfer. When that is your arrangement, your billing page shows a billing agreement instead of the Stripe portal, because there is no card to manage.
Your agreement shows:
- The plan it covers, and the rate you agreed to
- Paid through, the date your current term runs to
- How you pay, and any note the crew recorded with the deal
We remind you before it comes due. You get a notice 30 days out, another 7 days out, and one if it slips past the date. The reminders go to the Space owner and to every admin, in the app and by email, so a renewal never sneaks up on you.
When you pay, the crew records it and your paid-through date moves out a full term. The reminders reset with it.
Your agreement is managed by the crew, so it is read-only on your side. If something in it looks wrong, or your plans change, reach out and we will sort it.
Founding Businesses
Some of the first businesses on Frequency carry a Founding Business mark on their Space and in the directory. It is recognition for showing up early, and it is kept for good.
If you were given a founding rate, it is locked for as long as you keep the subscription up. That rate is not on offer any more: new Spaces pay the prices on the plans page, and those prices are the same whenever you start.
The badge says who you are, not what you pay. Your rate stays between you and the crew.
Common questions
Does anything charge me?
Only if you choose to subscribe. Nothing charges a Space that has not signed up. Free is a real plan with real allowances, so you can run a Space on it for as long as you like and pay when you want more room.
What happens if I cancel?
You keep your plan until the end of the term you paid for, then the Space drops to Free. Nothing is deleted: your contacts, events, and pages stay where they are, and the tools that need a plan simply wait for you.
Can two people manage billing?
Yes. The owner and any admin can see the billing page and make changes.
Where are my receipts?
In the Stripe portal, from the billing page. If you settle up directly with us instead, ask the crew and we will send what you need.
Still stuck? Write to us. A real person reads every message.
